Barefoot Breaks is a young, dynamic company specialising in tailor-made holidays to a select range of chic and intimate beach hideaways scattered around the Indian Ocean. We’re unashamedly a specialist tour operator – rather than knowing a little about a lot of destinations, we’d rather be experts in one area. We’re also not chasing the mass market with cheap and cheerful package holidays - this way we’re also able to offer genuine personal service to discerning travellers looking for more when booking their next holiday.

It was formed specifically in response to the massive changes currently taking place in the travel industry as well as amongst consumers. With more than 20 years experience in senior management positions in prominent South African travel companies – including car rental firms, airlines, hotel groups and retail travel agents – we saw that what had worked in the past was clearly not the right way forward and so decided to form Barefoot Breaks.

• In today’s high pressure and time-constrained world, more and more people are looking to truly get away from it all and recharge their batteries on holiday – increasingly they also want to go somewhere a little off the beaten track where they’re not going to have to share their experiences with hordes of other people.
• The major tour operators in South Africa today invariably feature only large “rack ‘em, pack ‘em and stack ‘em” type popular resorts – Barefoot Breaks instead focuses on smaller, more intimate and more exclusive retreats.
• Barefoot Breaks will not simply sell every lodge on offer in a destination – we’ve hand-picked the best; those lodges that we are totally comfortable selling. After experiencing them first hand, certain well known properties commonly featured by other tour operators have found themselves being crossed off our list as we did not feel they were up-to-scratch.
• We don’t work through travel agents but instead deal direct with our customers. Nothing personal against travel agents, but they sell such a vast array of products that they cannot even hope to give truly expert advice to clients – in essence travel agents have become all-rounders knowing “a little about a lot.” Instead, as specialists dealing with customers direct, Barefoot Breaks is able to give you truly expert and in-depth insights into our range of featured lodges as we know “a lot about a little”.
